Ain't No Sunshine when she's gone. It's not warm when she's away. Ain't no sunshine when she's gone, and she's always gone too long anytime she goes away. Wonder this time where she's gone. Wonder if she's gone to stay. Ain't no sunshine when she's gone and this house just ain't no home anytime she goes away.

~Al Green

"...The Wife of Shiva in Vedic Mythology. She has many names and is generally represented as dancing and trampling on the body of her husband. She has four hands. One holds a sword, one a human head, one is raised in a gesture of peace, and one in a threaghtening grasp. Nevertheless, this passionate and mysterious feminine power of God, "Ma Kali", strikes a chord in most people's hearts..." (from "Kali, The Goddess of Dakshineswar", E. Harding)

As the spring of 1991 approached, I tossed and turned thinking about the arrival of my new puppy. What would I name her? How would I raise her? Where will she sleep? What will she eat? Her name...the name of a Goddess...the name of a dancing Princess. Her name became "Blazin's Rasta Kali", the stunning fawn granddaughter of the well-known Ch. Blazin's Brahma Bull.

Kali was born on February 21, 1991, at Blazin' Bullmastiffs in Churchill, Maryland. She was bred and whelped by Tom and Roxanne LaPaglia. When the litter of four was born, I received the long awaited phone call from Roxanne proclaiming the birth of my soon to be best friend. I had been put on their waiting list several months prior to the phone call and was anxiously waiting for that special puppy to be chosen for me.

It was love at first sight when I arrived in Maryland to meet Kali. It was a moment in my life that I will never forget...there she was... Kali... eight weeks old, she stood staring at me while the others played. Kali was a beautiful, creamy fawn with an intense expression that could melt your heart with just one look.
Kali was born to show and quickly earned her AKC Championship title winning most of her points from the puppy classes. In the show ring, Kali proved to all who saw her, that rare combination of exuberance, beauty and grace. She had a way about her that was something that one could not teach. Her movement was free, yet powerful. Her gait was meaningful and confident. She was compact and well-muscled. Kali's biggest (and most obvious) fault was her owner/handler. Having purchased Kali primarily as a pet, I certainly had no background in handling although she taught me the ropes as if she had been there before.
Kali was the sweetest, most caring Bullmastiff I have ever known. Kali was swift in mind and physique. She was very athletic and, in her mind, could out run any critter who chose to tempt her. Kali spent most of her afternoons napping in the sunlight. She was nicknamed "The Roasted Peanut" because of her intense desire to roast herself in the direct sun.
To say Kali had a love for people was an understatement. Children of all ages loved Kali. She was kind and gentle and found her way into the hearts of all those she met. A true Princess, Kali had a love for fine toys and soft pillows. She carried her favorite toys around the house and offered them as gifts to visitors. Kali had a fear of being caught without a present to offer when company arrived. She would scurry in a desperate search to find anything at all as quickly as possible before the front door opened for our guests.
Her lifetime dream was to greet me at the door with an oversized feather pillow to offer...needless to say, the feather pillows never made it to the front door!

Kali gave me more than toys and gifts, she gave me trust and honest love. Her love for life and her will to please were beyond the power of words. Kali was focused and determined and found a way to appreciate everything she was involved in.

Kali was my sunshine. I see her in the eyes of each of her offspring and into the following generations. Kali is very much a part of each and every new Bulhaven puppy.

I miss the wagging little tail. I miss the plaintiff, pleading wail. I miss the wistful, loving glance. I miss the circling welcome dance"
